Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better than her stage name Queen Latifah. Her performance as a singer, music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered an impressive the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born in Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was just 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to the Baptist church. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her stage names Latifah, which means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10" She was a power forward of her high-school basketball team. In a school production, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah began to beatbox with the fresh rap ladies. Latifah became a member of the original Flavor Unit group, made up of several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The song was sent to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah after hearing the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
