Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, the Chillicothe ironworker on 20 February 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy Wilson was the first baby of six. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music her father played and loved at her home. At the age of four, Nancy knew that her future was as a singer. The talent she had developed was discovered when she sang in the church choir. After high school the singer began appearing often on Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. The same year she started working in nightclubs. When she graduated from high school, at the age of 17, Nancy took a class for a semester at the Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before going on to become professional as a singer. In 1956, she made her first album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 and 1958. As part of the group, Nancy released her first record in the studio of Dot Records. Cannonball adderley advised her to move into New York in order to increase her fame. She went to The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. She was hired to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx which was where her agent had seen her. Agent Adderley signed her to Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess whom I saw in the present. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. After Adderley's influences the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away to R&B towards jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley led her to the top and she had her breakout song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. Following that year the release, she was being invited to the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
